Care My Trip's Ujjain Kumbh Mela 2028 Guide: Shahi Snan Dates, Stays and Travel

27 Mar – 27 May 2028 (expected) Ram Ghat, Shipra · Mahakal Shahi Snan: 9 Apr, 23 Apr, 8 May

Ujjain Kumbh Mela 2028 is expected to run from 27 March to 27 May 2028, on the banks of the Shipra River. The three big baths fall in April and May. Anyone who has spent a May afternoon in Malwa knows what that means. 42°C by noon, hot wind, and the ghats already full before the sun is properly up. Rooms near Mahakal go early too. Families who sort things out by the end of 2027 usually get what they want. The rest take what's left.

At Care My Trip we put this Ujjain Kumbh Mela 2028 travel guide together after answering the same questions on the phone for months. Which dates? Which ghat? Indore or Ujjain to stay? How bad is the heat? (Bad. Plan for it.) It's all below.

Ujjain Kumbh Mela 2028 Dates, Schedule and What We Know So Far

Ujjain Simhastha 2028 happens when Guru is in Simha rashi and Surya is in Mesha rashi. That combination comes around once in 12 years, which is why Ujjain's Kumbh is called Simhastha. Since it's the full 12-year Kumbh, plenty of people simply call it the Maha Kumbh. The last one was in 2016, and anyone who went will tell you about the crowd at Ram Ghat.

The Ujjain Kumbh Mela 2028 dates being reported right now, by the administration and the big Hindi papers:

DateEvent
27 March 2028Mela period begins
9 April 2028First Shahi Snan (Chaitra Purnima)
23 April 2028Second Shahi Snan
8 May 2028Third Shahi Snan (Vaishakh Purnima)
27 May 2028Mela period ends

The Ujjain Simhastha 2028 dates for the smaller parv snans in between haven't been fully notified yet. They usually come out a few months before the mela. The Shahi Snan dates themselves could also change, so please check the official Simhastha notice before you book trains or pay for rooms.

Madhya Pradesh has been getting ready for Simhastha 2028 for a few years now. New roads, the Mahakal Lok corridor, longer ghats along the Shipra River, more parking outside the city. The crowd numbers in the news run into crores. Whatever the final count is, every Shahi Snan Ujjain morning will be packed.

Simhastha 2028 for First-Time Visitors

If this is your first Simhastha Kumbh Mela, here's something people don't expect. It's two months long, and most of those two months are actually fairly calm. The real crush is on the three Shahi Snan mornings, and a bit on the other Kumbh Mela bathing dates. The Simhastha Kumbh Mela is spread out like that on purpose. On ordinary days you can bathe in the Shipra River, get darshan and walk through the Akhara camps without much fuss. A lot of families do Simhastha 2028 on a quiet weekday first, then come back for a Shahi Snan if they want the full experience. And eat. The Ujjain Simhastha has langars, bhandaras and poha-jalebi stalls everywhere.

Snan Calendar: Ujjain Kumbh Mela 2028 Shahi Snan Dates

These are the Ujjain Kumbh Mela 2028 Shahi Snan dates as of now, and the main Kumbh Mela bathing dates most people plan around. Some notices say Amrit Snan instead. Same bath, new name.

9 April 2028, first Shahi Snan. Chaitra Purnima. The Akharas go down to the Shipra River in procession for the first time. Very heavy crowd. This is where the real rush starts.

23 April 2028, second Shahi Snan. In the dark fortnight of Vaishakh. It's already very hot by now, so most people bathe before 7 am.

8 May 2028, third Shahi Snan. Vaishakh Purnima. Last big day of the Simhastha Kumbh Mela, and often the busiest of the three.

On every Shahi Snan Ujjain day the 13 Akharas bathe first, in an order the Akhara Parishad fixes. Naga sadhus usually lead. Only after that do the ghats open for everyone else. Ram Ghat Ujjain is the main ghat, but the administration also opens bathing points along a long stretch of the river to spread people out.

When people search Kumbh Mela bathing dates for Ujjain, it's mostly these three they want. If your parents are coming, though, think about a regular parv snan day instead. Same river. Maybe a tenth of the people.

Why the Ujjain Simhastha Means So Much

The Puranas say drops of amrit fell at four places during the Samudra Manthan, Prayagraj, Haridwar, Nashik and Ujjain, and the Kumbh rotates between them for that reason. A dip during the Kumbh is believed to wash away sins and move the soul towards moksha.

What Ujjain has that the others don't is Mahakal. Mahakaleshwar Temple is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas and the only one facing south. Devotees believe Mahakal is lord of time and death. Ask most people why they're doing this Ujjain pilgrimage and they'll say two things. A bath in the Shipra River, and Mahakal darshan, both on the same morning. "Jai Mahakal" is basically how people say hello here.

The city is old, really old. It was Avantika, one of the seven sacred cities. It was a centre of astronomy and learning. Krishna is said to have studied at Sandipani Ashram here, and Kalidasa's writing is tied to Ujjain. Walk through the lanes behind Ram Ghat at 6 am and you'll feel it.

During Simhastha 2028 the Akhara camps, pravachans, kirtans and langars take over big parts of the city. Even people who don't think of themselves as very religious tend to come back saying they're glad they saw it once.

Where Ujjain Kumbh Mela 2028 Takes Place

All of Ujjain Kumbh Mela 2028 happens in Ujjain, along the Shipra River, with the area around Mahakaleshwar Temple as the centre.

Ujjain City and the Mela Zones

Ujjain is a mid-sized city in Madhya Pradesh, about 55 km from Indore. The mela covers the old city, the ghats, and big camp zones on open land outside town. Most hotels are in the city itself, around the railway station, Freeganj and the Mahakal area. Any Ujjain travel guide will tell you the old city is where you want to be, and it's true, if you can get a room.

Around Mahakaleshwar Temple and Mahakal Lok

Mahakaleshwar Temple is a short walk from Ram Ghat. The new Mahakal Lok corridor has opened up the area a lot, but darshan lines during Simhastha 2028 will still be long. The Bhasma Aarti, held before dawn, needs advance booking, and during the Simhastha Kumbh Mela it's very hard to get.

Ram Ghat on the Shipra River

Ram Ghat Ujjain is the oldest and most important ghat on the Shipra River. Most Akhara processions end here on Shahi Snan days. On non-snan evenings the Shipra aarti at Ram Ghat Ujjain is calm and lovely. Narsingh Ghat, Datta Akhara Ghat and Triveni Ghat are also used during the mela.

Getting There: How to Reach Ujjain Kumbh Mela 2028

This section covers how to reach Ujjain Kumbh Mela 2028. For the Ujjain Simhastha, the short version is this: fly to Indore, train to Ujjain, or drive in.

Flying Into Indore

The nearest airport is Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport in Indore, around 55 km away. There are direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad and more. A taxi from Indore to Mahakaleshwar Temple takes about an hour and a half on a normal day. On a Shahi Snan eve, give it three.

Trains to Ujjain Junction

Ujjain Junction sits on main lines with trains from Delhi, Mumbai, Bhopal, Ahmedabad, Jaipur and lots of other places. Railways normally run Simhastha specials, and a few temporary stations get set up around the city for crowd control. Simhastha 2028 specials will probably be announced a couple of months ahead. Book the day the reservation window opens.

By Road From Indore, Bhopal and Omkareshwar

Ujjain connects easily to Indore (55 km), Bhopal (around 190 km) and Omkareshwar (around 140 km). State and private buses run all day. Many people do a small circuit of Ujjain, Omkareshwar and Maheshwar, adding a few Ujjain tourist places on the way.

If you're coming for a Shahi Snan, reach the day before. Of all our Ujjain Kumbh Mela travel tips, this is the one people skip and then regret.

Moving Around Ujjain on Shahi Snan Days

On Shahi Snan days private vehicles are stopped at parking lots on the edge of the city. Shuttle buses and e-rickshaws take you towards the ghats, and the last bit is on foot. Near Mahakaleshwar Temple and Ram Ghat, walking routes are usually one-way. On normal days autos and e-rickshaws are everywhere and cheap. The stretch between Mahakaleshwar Temple and Ram Ghat Ujjain is a few minutes' walk through the lanes anyway. On a Shahi Snan Ujjain morning, police close most of those lanes to vehicles from the night before.

Our suggestion: don't drive into the old city on a Shahi Snan day at all. Leave the car outside, or stay where you can walk.

Picking a Base: Where to Stay in Ujjain During Kumbh Mela 2028

Ujjain Kumbh Mela accommodation near the temple and the ghats sells out months before the Shahi Snan days. Care My Trip lists hotels, homestays, ashrams and camps, so you can pick the kind of stay that fits your group. Here's a rough guide to where to stay in Ujjain during Kumbh Mela 2028:

AreaGood forDistance to Ram Ghat
Mahakal / Ram Ghat areaDarshan and snan on foot0–1 km
Freeganj / near railway stationTrain arrivals, mid-range hotels3–4 km
Dewas Road / Indore RoadBigger hotels, easier parking5–10 km

IndorePremium hotels, airport55 km

For one Shahi Snan plus Mahakal darshan, the Ram Ghat and temple area is the most practical answer to where to stay in Ujjain during Kumbh Mela 2028. Hotels near Ram Ghat are small and simple, but you can walk to the water at 4 am. Families who want more comfort usually go for Dewas Road or Indore Road, or even stay in Indore and drive in.

Book your Ujjain Kumbh Mela 2028 accommodation three to four months before your snan date. We also hold Ujjain Kumbh Mela 2028 accommodation for groups, bhajan mandals, temple trusts, and those family trips where the headcount changes every week.

How Ujjain Kumbh Mela accommodation works during the Simhastha is a little different. Rooms near the river are small and often have no lift or parking, so they suit people fine with stairs and walking. Hotels near Ram Ghat and hotels near Mahakaleshwar Temple usually ask for a minimum stay of two or three nights on Shahi Snan dates. Outer-area Ujjain Kumbh Mela accommodation is more flexible. Tell us your group size and who's travelling and we'll suggest an area. Whichever kind of stay you choose, every Care My Trip booking comes with real photos, the actual distance to the ghat, and a number someone picks up.

Ujjain Kumbh Mela 2028 Hotels, From Lodges to Business Stays

When people ask us for a hotel for the Kumbh, they usually want one of three things. Walking distance to Mahakal. Comfort for parents. Or a low price. Ujjain Kumbh Mela 2028 hotels range from simple lodges near the station to newer business hotels on the main roads, plus a few resort-style places outside the city. The Care My Trip team visits every property before listing it and tells you the real distance to Ram Ghat. Almost all our Ujjain Kumbh Mela 2028 hotels have AC rooms, which in April and May isn't a luxury, it's survival. Good hotels close to the temple are limited, so ask early.

Rooms Close to Mahakal: Hotels Near Mahakaleshwar Temple

Hotels near Mahakaleshwar Temple fill up first, because everyone wants early darshan and a snan without a long walk. Most are small, family-run places in the lanes around the temple and Mahakal Lok. If that's what you want, book hotels near Mahakaleshwar Temple before anything else. Hotels near Ram Ghat are a good backup and often a bit cheaper. Honestly, we'd pick one ourselves.

Stays for a Tight Budget

Budget Ujjain Kumbh Mela accommodation means lodges near the station, dormitories, and rooms run by samaj bhawans and local trusts. Basic, clean enough, and close to a shuttle point. A few cheaper hotels near Ram Ghat also fall in this range if you book very early.

Premium Hotels and Resorts

For more comfort, look at the bigger hotels on Indore Road and Dewas Road, a few resorts, or premium hotels in Indore itself. They suit senior citizens, families with small children, and NRI guests who want a car and driver for the whole trip. A few premium hotels near Mahakaleshwar Temple and Ram Ghat Ujjain have also opened since Mahakal Lok was built.

Living With a Local Family: Homestays

During Ujjain Simhastha 2028, a homestay means a room in a local family's house, usually in the old city, Freeganj or the colonies near the Shipra River. You eat what they eat, so poha and jalebi in the morning, dal-bafla at lunch, and someone at home who knows which lanes are closing tomorrow. It costs less than most hotels. There are only two or three rooms in each house, so they go quickly. Care My Trip lists a small number of homestays our team has actually visited, and they're some of our most-asked-for Ujjain Kumbh Mela accommodation for families.

Tent Cities and Mela Camps

The administration and private operators set up big tent cities for Ujjain Simhastha 2028. These camps usually have proper beds, power points, shared or attached bathrooms and veg food. Because it's summer, ask about coolers or AC, shade over the walkways and drinking water before you book. Seriously, ask. The camps we list are picked with the heat in mind.

Want more comfort? Luxury camps have Swiss cottage tents with attached bathrooms, air-conditioning, good beds, a dining hall and a help desk for ghat visits and Mahakaleshwar Temple darshan. Tents are kept few, so it doesn't feel like a crowded campus. Care My Trip's luxury camps can also be booked as a package with transfers to Ram Ghat and Mahakal included.

Ashrams and Dharamshalas Near the Shipra

Lots of pilgrims stay in ashrams and dharamshalas near the Shipra River and around Mahakaleshwar Temple. Cheap, simple, close to the ghats. Some have gate timings and a daily routine, so ask before booking. Ashrams near Ram Ghat Ujjain are the first to fill. You can book directly or through Care My Trip.

What to See Between Snans: Ujjain Tourist Places

Got a free day? These Ujjain tourist places are all a short auto ride away and fit easily into an Ujjain pilgrimage. They're in every Ujjain travel guide, but this is the order our guests usually do them in.

Darshan and Bhasma Aarti at Mahakal

The reason most people come. Try for early morning darshan, and if you manage a booking, the Bhasma Aarti. Afterwards, walk down to the Shipra River, it's only a few minutes. Carry almost nothing. Phones and bags are often not allowed inside, and there's a dress code for the garbhagriha.

Evening Aarti at Ram Ghat

Even if you bathe somewhere else, come to Ram Ghat Ujjain one evening for the aarti. Diyas on the Shipra River, bells from both banks, people just sitting on the steps. Nothing like a Shahi Snan morning.

The Kal Bhairav Temple

About 5 km from the centre. Kal Bhairav is seen as the kotwal, the guardian, of Ujjain, and the deity is offered liquor here, which surprises a lot of first-timers. Lines get long during the mela, and worst on a Shahi Snan Ujjain morning.

Harsiddhi and Its Lamp Towers

Harsiddhi is one of the Shakti Peethas, right near Mahakaleshwar Temple. Its two tall deepstambhs are lit on festival evenings, and catching them lit is one of the best sights of any Ujjain pilgrimage.

Other Ujjain tourist places worth adding are Sandipani Ashram, Mangalnath, Chintaman Ganesh, Gadkalika, the Bhartrihari caves and the old Vedh Shala observatory. With a car, Omkareshwar makes a good day trip.

Ujjain Kumbh Mela Travel Tips From the Care My Trip Team

These Ujjain Kumbh Mela travel tips come from problems we've seen pilgrims run into, more than once. Treat them as the practical half of this Ujjain travel guide.

Summer Packing List

Light cottons. A cap or a gamchha for your head. Sunglasses, sunscreen and a refillable bottle. ORS packets and glucose, honestly, don't skip these. One extra set of clothes for after the snan, a small towel, slippers with grip, your regular medicines and a photocopy of your ID. A small pouch to keep your phone dry at the ghat is useful too, and you'll want it for the whole Ujjain pilgrimage.

Beating the Heat and Staying Safe

The heat is the biggest risk at the Simhastha Kumbh Mela. Drink water all day, stay indoors between noon and 4 pm, and keep an eye on elders for dizziness or confusion. At the ghat, bathe only where the administration allows, hold the chains, and listen to the water police. Keep kids close, especially at Ram Ghat Ujjain on Shahi Snan days. Fix a meeting point before you walk into any crowd, a temple gate or a big hoarding.

Eating and Drinking Safely

Stick to bottled or filtered water and food that's freshly cooked. Langar and bhandara food is generally fine because it's made and served hot. Skip cut fruit and roadside juice in the heat. It sounds fussy, but it's one of the Ujjain Kumbh Mela travel tips that keeps people out of the clinic. If you want to carry Shipra River water home, use a sealed bottle. Many families like to finish their Ujjain pilgrimage with Mahakal prasad from the temple counters.

Handling the Shahi Snan Rush

Reach a day before any Shahi Snan. Go down to the ghat very early, while it's cool, or wait till evening. Stick to the marked one-way routes even when they look longer. With elderly parents, a regular parv snan day between the main Kumbh Mela bathing dates is much easier on everyone.

Book Early, Pay Less

Every list of Ujjain Kumbh Mela travel tips says this, and for good reason. Rooms near Mahakaleshwar Temple and Ram Ghat go first for the April and May baths, and rates climb every week as the dates get closer. Book your Ujjain Kumbh Mela accommodation as soon as your date is fixed. You'll get better cancellation terms too, and more time to plan the rest of the trip with this Ujjain travel guide.

We'll keep this Ujjain Kumbh Mela 2028 travel guide updated as the administration shares more on routes, passes and parv snan dates.

Common questions

Ujjain Kumbh Mela 2028: FAQs

When is Ujjain Kumbh Mela 2028?

It's expected to run from 27 March to 27 May 2028, with Shahi Snans on 9 April, 23 April and 8 May 2028.

Is there any difference between Ujjain Kumbh Mela and Ujjain Simhastha?

No. Ujjain's Kumbh is called Simhastha because it happens when Jupiter is in Simha rashi (Leo). Ujjain Simhastha 2028 and Ujjain Kumbh Mela 2028 are the same event.

Is it a Maha Kumbh?

It's the full 12-year Simhastha, which is why many people call it a Maha Kumbh.

Where does the Shahi Snan take place in Ujjain?

Mainly at Ram Ghat on the Shipra River, with more ghats opened along the river for the public.

Can I get Mahakal darshan during Simhastha?

Yes, but the lines are very long. Go early, and book the Bhasma Aarti online well ahead.

Which is the nearest airport to Ujjain?

Indore, about 55 km away. Around an hour and a half by road on a normal day.

How hot does Ujjain get in April and May?

Very. Daytime temperatures often cross 40°C, so plan your snan and darshan for early morning.

Do you offer homestays as well as hotels?

Yes. A homestay is a good choice for families who want home food and a quieter base.

Is Ujjain Simhastha safe for elderly people and children?

Yes, with some planning. Pick a regular snan day, stay near the ghats, and avoid the midday heat.

Can I visit Omkareshwar during the Simhastha?

Yes. It's about 140 km away, so a long day trip or one night there works.

Can I get Ujjain Kumbh Mela accommodation at short notice?

Sometimes, mostly on non-snan days or in outer areas like Dewas Road or Indore. For Shahi Snan dates, last-minute rooms near Mahakaleshwar Temple or hotels near Ram Ghat are very rare.

How do I book with Care My Trip?

Pick your snan date, choose a hotel, homestay, camp or ashram on our site, and confirm. Or call or WhatsApp the Care My Trip team and we'll do it for you.

When should I book my stay?

Three to four months before your snan date. Earlier if you want to be near Mahakal or Ram Ghat.
