Srinagar / Jammu · Pahalgam · Chandanwari · Sheshnag · Panchtarni · Amarnath Cave · Baltal · Srinagar

The Amarnath Yatra is a multi-day trek through the high Himalayas of Jammu and Kashmir to the cave shrine of Lord Shiva at 3,888 metres. In Hindu tradition this is where Lord Shiva narrated the Amar Katha, the secret of immortality, to Goddess Parvati. The cave holds a naturally formed ice Shivling that grows and diminishes with the lunar cycle, alongside the Parvati Pindi and Ganesha Pindi. This six day package follows the traditional Pahalgam route, the longer path through Chandanwari, Pissu Ghati, Sheshnag Lake, the Mahagunas Pass and Panchtarni, before descending to Baltal and returning to Srinagar. The cave is open only during the Yatra season, from 1 July to 28 August 2026, and the...
Arrive at Srinagar Airport or Jammu Railway Station, where you are received and driven to Pahalgam through the Kashmir valley, past poplar lined roads and paddy fields. Pahalgam, at 2,130 metres on the Lidder river, is the base town for the traditional Amarnath Yatra route. After check in, rest and prepare for the trek, pack your daypack, check your gear and confirm any pony or porter arrangements with the tour coordinator. In the evening a short briefing covers the next three days of trekking, including the route, distances, health advice and what to carry, followed by an early night.
After an early breakfast, drive from Pahalgam to Chandanwari, the official starting point of the Pahalgam trekking route. The first section is a steep but short climb through Pissu Ghati with views back over the valley. The trail then levels out through meadows and alpine forest along the Amravati stream, passing Wavbal and Zojpal before the final climb to Sheshnag. Sheshnag Lake, at 3,590 metres, is a glacial lake ringed by snow peaks and is believed to be where Lord Shiva left his serpent on the way to the cave. Overnight in tents at Sheshnag.
This is the longest and most important trekking day. After an early breakfast, trek from Sheshnag toward Panchtarni over the Mahagunas Pass, which at 4,890 metres is the highest point on the Pahalgam route. The climb to the pass is gradual but demanding at this altitude, and the descent into the Panchtarni valley is steep. Panchtarni is where five mountain streams meet, traditionally taken to represent the five elements. Rest briefly and leave non-essential items at camp, then trek to the Amarnath Cave at 3,888 metres on a well marked trail with Shrine Board facilities. Pilgrims may take a dip in the cold stream at the cave entrance before joining the darshan queue. Inside the cave are the naturally formed ice Shivling and the Parvati Pindi and Ganesha Pindi. Return to Panchtarni for the night in tents.
After an early breakfast, begin the descent from Panchtarni toward Baltal. The route follows the Amravati river downstream through open valley terrain, dropping steadily to the Baltal road head on the Srinagar to Leh highway, where the trekking part of the Yatra ends and the vehicle waits. The evening is kept free to rest after three days of high altitude trekking, with the night spent at the Baltal camping ground.
After breakfast, drive from Baltal to Srinagar along the Srinagar to Leh National Highway, past the Zoji La approach and the Sonamarg meadows and down into the Kashmir valley. Optional stops can be made on the way at extra cost, either at Manasbal Lake or at Kheer Bawani Temple, the spring temple of Goddess Ragnya Devi whose waters are said to change colour as an omen and which is revered by Kashmiri Pandits. On arrival in Srinagar, check in to the hotel and rest after the days spent in tents.
After breakfast, check out of the hotel and transfer to Srinagar Airport for your return flight, bringing the Amarnath Yatra to a close.
