How long is the Kedarnath trek?
The trek to Kedarnath runs approximately 21 kilometres one way from Gaurikund. The older path along the Mandakini via Rambara was around 14 km, but it was washed away in places during the 2013 floods. The route in use today climbs to roughly 13,000 feet before descending to the temple at 11,760 feet.
That extra height and distance is the single fact most itineraries get wrong. It is not a long day walk. Planned as one, it produces exhausted pilgrims who reach the shrine too late for an unhurried darshan and have nothing left for the descent.
Getting to the trailhead
Vehicles stop at Sonprayag. From there a government taxi runs the last stretch to Gaurikund, paid directly on the day — private vehicles are not permitted on that section. The trek proper begins at Gaurikund.
Why an overnight halt at the shrine
Every Chardham and Do Dham itinerary we run includes a night at Kedarnath itself, in basic dormitory accommodation near the temple. It buys three things: darshan without a clock running, the evening aarti, and a descent made on fresh legs the following morning rather than in the dark.
We also keep a further night in the base sector at Guptkashi, Phata or Sitapur as buffer. Weather, a helicopter technical fault or a medical problem can all delay this leg, and a programme with only two nights in that sector has nowhere to absorb it.
Pony, palki and pithu
Pony, palki and pithu are available at Gaurikund and are paid directly — they are not included in package rates. Pilgrims who are not confident of walking the distance are better served hiring one at the start than deciding halfway up.
Flying instead
Helicopter tickets to Kedarnath are booked separately from a road package and depend on availability and weather. If you would rather not trek at all, the Chardham by helicopter and Do Dham by helicopter programmes fly the whole circuit, with a shuttle to the temple and a priority puja pass at each Dham.
