Why the road yatra takes 10 days
The four temples are in two valleys that no road joins directly, and two of them are reached on foot. The 10 days from Haridwar go like this:
- Day 1: Haridwar to Barkot via Mussoorie.
- Day 2: Yamunotri, a walk of about 5 km each way from Janki Chatti, and back to Barkot.
- Day 3: Barkot to Uttarkashi or Harsil.
- Day 4: Gangotri and back to Uttarkashi.
- Day 5: Uttarkashi to Guptkashi, Phata or Sitapur.
- Day 6: Up to Kedarnath, by trek or helicopter, with the night at Kedarnath.
- Day 7: Down to Gaurikund and back to Guptkashi or Sitapur.
- Day 8: On to Govindghat or Pipalkoti via Chopta and Joshimath.
- Day 9: Badrinath temple and Mana village.
- Day 10: Back via the Panch Prayag and Rishikesh.
The Kedarnath trek is about 16 to 17 km one way from Gaurikund, which is why two days go to it; read the Kedarnath trek guide before you decide between walking, a pony or a helicopter.
Can it be done faster?
- By helicopter: all four Dhams in 6 days from Dehradun, without the long drives or the Kedarnath trek. It depends on the weather, and fares are confirmed when you book.
- Two Dhams instead of four: the Do Dham or Char Dham comparison explains what you give up.
- Not by cutting nights on the road: the mountain roads are slow, and landslides can close them for hours, so a tighter plan leaves no room for a delay.
Keep a spare day
Add a day before you book your train or flight home, especially in the monsoon months of July and August. Check the opening and closing dates for your year, and register before you travel; see Char Dham Yatra registration.
