The Do Dham Yatra is the pilgrimage to Kedarnath (Lord Shiva) and Badrinath (Lord Vishnu), the two most visited of Uttarakhand's Char Dham shrines. By road it takes 6 days from Haridwar or 8 days from Delhi, with a night at Kedarnath after the 21 km trek from Gaurikund. By helicopter from Dehradun it takes 4 days, or a single day. The 2027 season is expected to open in early May 2027 and run to early November.
Do Dham Yatra 2027 dates
The 2026 season is still open: Kedarnath closes on 11 November 2026 and Badrinath on 13 November 2026, both tentative. For 2027, Gangotri and Yamunotri traditionally open on Akshaya Tritiya, which falls on 9 May 2027. Kedarnath and Badrinath usually open within a few days of it, but their exact dates are declared separately by the temple committee early in 2027, on Maha Shivratri for Kedarnath and Basant Panchami for Badrinath. We update this guide as soon as they are announced.
Bookings for 2027 can be held now. The first two weeks after opening and the June school holidays are the busiest stretch, so hotels at Guptkashi, Sitapur and Badrinath fill first.

Day-by-day route from Haridwar
- Day 1, Haridwar to Guptkashi or Sitapur: about 200 km, 7 hours, past the Devprayag confluence.
- Day 2, Kedarnath: drive to Sonprayag, government taxi to Gaurikund, then the 21 km trek (or pony, palki or helicopter) to the temple. Night at Kedarnath.
- Day 3, back to Guptkashi or Sitapur: morning darshan and the walk down.
- Day 4, to Pipalkoti or Govindghat: about 196 km via Chopta and Joshimath.
- Day 5, Badrinath and Mana village: darshan, Tapt Kund and Mana, the last village before the Tibet border.
- Day 6, back to Haridwar: via the Panch Prayag and Rishikesh.
The Delhi version adds a Haridwar night at the start and a Rishikesh night at the close, so the long mountain drives do not begin straight off a Delhi transfer.
Kedarnath Yatra: the trek
The Kedarnath Yatra is the harder half. Kedarnath temple stands at 11,760 feet and is reached only on foot, by pony or palki, or by helicopter. The trek is about 21 km one way from Gaurikund and climbs to roughly 13,000 feet. Every road programme includes a night at Kedarnath so that darshan and the evening aarti are not rushed. Badrinath Yatra: by road
The Badrinath Yatra has no trek. The road runs to the temple town on the Alaknanda, so it suits elderly pilgrims who cannot walk to Kedarnath. That is why some families split the trip: Badrinath by road for everyone, Kedarnath by helicopter or pony for those who need it.
Best time for the Do Dham Yatra
- May to June: the main season; pleasant days, cold nights, busiest weeks.
- July to August: monsoon. The shrines stay open, but landslides and road closures make travel unpredictable.
- September to October: clear skies and smaller crowds; nights at Kedarnath can drop below zero.
Before you book
- Registration with the Uttarakhand government is mandatory for every pilgrim; carry the registration and a photo ID.
- Pony, palki, the Sonprayag–Gaurikund taxi and Kedarnath helicopter tickets are paid directly and are not in package rates.
- Carry woollens, a raincoat, trekking shoes with grip, personal medicines and cash. ATMs are scarce beyond Guptkashi.
