Auli in Winter: When It Snows, Skiing, and How to Get There

Auli gets its snow from about December to February, and January is usually the surest month for skiing. The slopes sit above Joshimath in Chamoli district, with views of Nanda Devi. Here is how to plan a winter trip, including New Year.

When it snows

MonthWhat to expect
NovemberCold, clear and dry; light snow possible on the upper slopes
DecemberRegular snowfall usually begins; New Year week is busy
JanuaryUsually the deepest snow and the best skiing
FebruarySnow cover continues; clearer days
MarchSnow melting; quieter

Snowfall varies from year to year, so keep your plan flexible and check conditions a week before.

Skiing in Auli

Ski courses and gear hire run on the slopes in the snow season, for beginners as well as experienced skiers. Snow activities are paid for locally and are not part of most tour packages.

The Joshimath-Auli ropeway

The cable car from Joshimath to Auli was shut after the Joshimath land subsidence in January 2023. Check whether it has reopened before you plan around it; otherwise the road from Joshimath is the way up, and heavy snow can close it for a day or two.

How to reach Auli from Dehradun

  • By road: about 280 km via Rishikesh, Rudraprayag and Joshimath; a long day's drive.
  • By helicopter and road: fly about 40 minutes from Sahastradhara, Dehradun to Gauchar, then about 97 km by road via Karnaprayag and Nandprayag. That is how our Auli by Helicopter tour (2 nights, 3 days) works.

What to do besides skiing

  • Gorson Bugyal: a walk through oak forest to a high meadow, snow-covered in winter.
  • Narsingh Temple, Joshimath: where Badrinath's worship continues in winter; see Char Dham winter seats.
  • The artificial lake on the slopes, built for snow-making.

Packing for the cold

Thermals, a down jacket, waterproof gloves, a cap, snow boots or shoes with grip, sunglasses and sunscreen for the snow glare. More on the region in our Auli and Harsil guide.
