Most elderly pilgrims should not walk the 21 km to Kedarnath. The temple stands at 11,760 ft and the trail from Gaurikund climbs to about 13,000 ft. The good news is that there are three ways up that do not need walking. Here is how they compare and how to plan around them.
Helicopter, palki or pony
| Option | Good for | Think about |
|---|---|---|
| Helicopter | Elders with heart, knee or breathing problems; short trips | Limited seats, weather delays, a weight limit per passenger |
| Palki (dandi) | Elders who cannot fly or ride; any weather when the trail is open | A long day on the trail; carried by four bearers |
| Pony | Fit elders who can sit a horse for several hours | Tiring on the back and knees; steep, crowded sections |
Booking the Kedarnath helicopter
- Book only on the official IRCTC HeliYatra website (heliyatra.irctc.co.in). Tickets are not sold by agents, and many fake sites and social media "booking" offers are scams.
- Register first: you need your Char Dham registration number to book. See how to register.
- Helipads: shuttle flights run from Phata, Sersi and Guptkashi; fares are fixed each season by the state.
- Book the day the window opens, and have a palki as a backup in case flights are cancelled for weather.
Prefer not to deal with the shuttle at all? Our Do Dham helicopter yatra flies from Dehradun, with the Kedarnath temple about 500 m from the helipad.
Stay overnight at Kedarnath
Every road programme of ours includes a night at Kedarnath, so darshan is not rushed and nobody comes down tired in the dark. Nights are cold, below zero late in the season, so pack thermals, a cap and gloves.
Health checks before you go
- See a doctor before the trip if your parent has heart, lung or blood pressure problems, and carry their medicines and prescriptions.
- Rest a day at Guptkashi or Sitapur before going up; walk slowly at the top and drink water.
- Tell us about any condition when you book, so the plan allows extra rest.
The best package for elders
The Kedarnath Ek Dham (3 nights, 4 days) and the Do Dham from Haridwar both keep a buffer night below Kedarnath for weather. Badrinath has no trek at all, so families often split the trip: Badrinath by road for everyone, Kedarnath by helicopter or palki. More on the trail in the Kedarnath trek guide.
Frequently asked questions
Can senior citizens go to Kedarnath?
Yes, by helicopter, palki or pony rather than walking the 21 km trek. Get a medical check first, and plan a night at Kedarnath so darshan is unhurried.
Where do I book the Kedarnath helicopter?
Only on the official IRCTC HeliYatra website, heliyatra.irctc.co.in. You need your Char Dham registration number. Avoid agents and social media offers.
Which helipads fly to Kedarnath?
Shuttle flights run from Phata, Sersi and Guptkashi. Full helicopter yatras fly from Dehradun.
Is palki better than pony for elderly people?
For most elders, yes. A palki is carried by four bearers and needs no riding, while a pony ride takes several hours and is hard on the back and knees.
