Haridwar vs Nashik vs Ujjain Kumbh: Which One Should Your Family Pick?

Many families ask us a simple question: we can manage only one Kumbh, so which one? Haridwar and Nashik both fall in 2027, and Ujjain follows in 2028. They are very different trips. Here is how they compare on weather, crowd, travel and feel.

The short answer

  • Haridwar 2027 if you want the Ganga, Har Ki Pauri and an easy trip from Delhi, and you do not mind the cold.
  • Nashik 2027 if you are in Maharashtra or Gujarat, want to see the Naga sadhus at Trimbakeshwar, and can handle monsoon rain.
  • Ujjain 2028 if Mahakal darshan matters most to you and you can plan around the summer heat.

Season and weather

Each mela falls in a different season, and that shapes the whole trip.

Haridwar runs from 14 January to 20 April 2027. January and February mornings are near 5°C, and the river water is cold. The April dates are easier on older people.

Nashik has its Amrit Snans on 2 August, 31 August and 11 to 12 September 2027, right in peak monsoon. Expect rain, slippery ghats and a rising river.

Ujjain is expected from 27 March to 27 May 2028. This is peak heat, with 42°C by noon and days often over 40°C.

Crowd

All three will be very crowded on the big days. Haridwar is estimated to see 8 to 10 crore visitors over its 97 days. On every Amrit or Shahi Snan day, in all three cities, the 13 Akharas bathe first, private cars are stopped outside the city, and you walk or use shuttle buses.

Nashik's crowd is spread over two towns, because the Vaishnava Akharas bathe at Ramkund in Nashik and the Shaiva Akharas at Kushavarta in Trimbakeshwar. In every city, the regular parv snan days are far less crowded.

Getting there

Haridwar: the nearest airport is Jolly Grant, Dehradun, about 35 km away. Delhi is about 220 km by road, and Rishikesh is 25 km.

Nashik: Ozar airport is about 20 km away. Mumbai is about 170 km and Pune about 210 km. Nashik Road station is 8 to 10 km from Panchavati, and Trimbakeshwar is 28 to 30 km from Nashik.

Ujjain: the nearest airport is Indore, about 55 km away. Bhopal is about 190 km and Omkareshwar about 140 km.

The character of each mela

Haridwar: Ganga and Har Ki Pauri. The main ghat is Har Ki Pauri at Brahma Kund, where the Ganga comes down from the hills. Officially this is an Ardh Kumbh, but it is being run at full scale, and the old Shahi Snan is now called Amrit Snan. If you want quieter ghats, Kankhal, Vishnu Ghat and Subhash Ghat are calmer. Haridwar also suits families who want a yoga retreat alongside the snan. More in our Haridwar Kumbh Mela 2027 guide.

Nashik: the Godavari, split across two towns. This is a full 12-year Simhastha, last held in 2015. Ramkund in Panchavati is where the Vaishnava Akharas bathe. Kushavarta in Trimbakeshwar is where the Shaiva Akharas and Naga sadhus bathe. On the 3rd Amrit Snan the two towns bathe on different days, 11 September at Ramkund and 12 September at Kushavarta. See the Nashik Kumbh Mela 2027 guide.

Ujjain: Shipra and Mahakal. The main ghat is Ram Ghat on the Shipra. Mahakaleshwar is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas and the only south-facing one, and the Mahakal Lok corridor is close by. Bhasma Aarti needs advance booking. Read our Ujjain Kumbh Mela 2028 guide.

So which one?

Go by your family more than by the mela. If Dadi feels the cold, choose an April date in Haridwar or think about Nashik. If Nana cannot take heat, avoid noon in Ujjain or pick a cooler mela. If you want to see the Naga sadhus up close, Trimbakeshwar in Nashik and the Amrit Snan days anywhere are your best chance.

Whichever you choose, book 3 to 4 months ahead and reach a day before the big snan. Check open stays in the Haridwar guide, the Nashik guide or the Ujjain guide, or ask our team on call or WhatsApp.
