Kumbh Mela Packing List by Season: Haridwar, Nashik and Ujjain

Packing for a Kumbh is not like packing for a normal holiday. You will walk a lot, you will get wet, and on the big days you may not see your car or your room for many hours. The upcoming three melas also fall in three very different seasons. So here is a list split by city, with the common items first.

Pack for walking, not for the car

On Amrit or Shahi Snan days, private cars are stopped outside the city. You walk or take shuttle buses to the ghat. That changes how you pack. Carry one small backpack or cloth bag per person for the day, and keep the big suitcase at your stay. A suitcase with wheels is fine for the room, but not for the ghat road.

Common items for every Kumbh

  • A quick-dry towel and one full change of clothes for after the dip
  • A plastic or zip bag for wet clothes
  • Comfortable footwear you can slip off at the ghat, plus a spare pair
  • Photo ID for every member, and a printed copy of your booking
  • A slip in each child's and elder's pocket with your phone number and stay address
  • Regular medicines in their original strips, with a few extra days' stock
  • A small first-aid pouch: plasters, ORS, pain relief, antiseptic
  • Power bank and charging cable
  • Some cash in small notes, kept in two different places
  • A refillable water bottle and dry snacks
  • A small torch, since you may start before sunrise
  • Puja items if you want to do your own; if you book a puja with a local pandit through us, they usually arrange the samagri

Winter Haridwar 2027

The Haridwar mela runs from 14 January to 20 April 2027. January and February mornings are near 5°C, and the snan is usually early, so dress in layers you can take off. More on dates and stays in our Haridwar Kumbh Mela 2027 guide.

  • Thermal inners for everyone, especially elders
  • A warm jacket or shawl, monkey cap or muffler, and woollen socks
  • A light blanket or shawl to wrap around right after the dip
  • Moisturiser and lip balm, as the cold air dries the skin
  • Lighter clothes for the April dates, as the days warm up

Ask your stay whether heaters and razai are given. If you are staying in a camp, this matters a lot.

Monsoon Nashik 2027

Nashik's Amrit Snans are on 2 August, 31 August, and 11 September at Ramkund and 12 September at Kushavarta in Trimbakeshwar. This is peak monsoon: rain, slippery ghats and a rising river. See our Nashik Kumbh Mela 2027 guide.

  • A proper raincoat (better than an umbrella in a crowd)
  • Rubber slippers or sandals with good grip; avoid leather
  • Quick-dry clothes, and extra innerwear and socks
  • Plastic covers for phones, wallets and documents
  • Mosquito repellent
  • An extra bag for muddy footwear

If you will go between Nashik and Trimbakeshwar, which are 28 to 30 km apart, keep a dry set of clothes in the vehicle.

Summer Ujjain 2028

Ujjain's Simhastha is expected from 27 March to 27 May 2028, with Shahi Snans reported for 9 April, 23 April and 8 May 2028. It is often over 40°C and can reach 42°C by noon. Details are on our Ujjain Kumbh Mela 2028 guide.

  • Light cotton clothes in pale colours
  • A cap or wide hat, and sunglasses
  • Sunscreen
  • ORS packets and electrolyte powder, more than you think you need
  • A cotton gamchha or scarf you can wet and put on the neck
  • A small foldable umbrella for shade while walking

Plan your snan and the Mahakaleshwar visit early in the morning, and rest indoors in the afternoon.

What to leave at home

  • Expensive jewellery and watches
  • Big bags on the ghat day; they slow you down in the crowd
  • Glass bottles and anything heavy
  • New shoes you have not walked in before

A simple test: if you would not want to carry it for two hours in a crowd, leave it in the room.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What should we wear for Haridwar Kumbh in January?

Layers. Mornings are near 5°C, so pack thermal inners, a warm jacket or shawl, a cap and woollen socks, plus a shawl to wrap around right after the dip.

What footwear is best for the Nashik Kumbh in monsoon?

Rubber slippers or sandals with good grip. The ghats get slippery in the rain, so avoid leather and new shoes, and carry a spare pair.

How do we handle the heat at Ujjain Simhastha 2028?

Wear light cotton, carry a cap, sunscreen and plenty of ORS, and do your snan early. It is often over 40°C and can touch 42°C by noon.

Should we carry a big suitcase to the ghat?

No. On big snan days private cars are stopped outside the city and you walk or take shuttle buses. Leave the suitcase at your stay and carry a small day bag.

Do we need to bring our own puja items?

Only if you want to do your own puja. If you book a puja with a local pandit through Care My Trip, ask us and they can usually arrange the samagri.

What should every family member carry?

Photo ID, a towel and change of clothes, a water bottle, regular medicines, and a slip in the pocket with a family phone number and the stay address.
