Kumbh Mela Stays: Camps vs Hotels vs Homestays vs Ashrams

After the date, the next big decision is where to stay. At the Kumbh, the right stay is the one that saves you walking, keeps you comfortable in the weather, and fits the way your family likes to travel. Here is how the four main options compare.

The four kinds of stay

Camps and tents: deluxe vs luxury Swiss cottage

Camps put you inside the mela's rhythm. You hear the aarti, you walk to the ghat, and the evenings are spent around the camp. Care My Trip offers two main levels.

  • Deluxe tents: comfortable beds and the basics, for people who mostly want a clean place to sleep close to the action.
  • Luxury Swiss cottage tents: larger tents with attached bathrooms. For elders, an attached bathroom at night is a big comfort.

Before booking any camp, ask about the bathroom (attached or shared), hot water, bedding, and how far the camp is from the ghat.

Hotels

Hotels are the familiar choice. You get a proper room, regular bathrooms and often a lift. The main thing to check is the walk on snan days, because private cars are stopped outside the city on the big days and you will walk or take shuttle buses. A cheaper hotel far away can cost you hours on the road.

Homestays

A homestay feels like staying with relatives. You get home food and a host who knows the lanes. Homestays are good for families with children, and for anyone who wants a slower pace. They have only a few rooms, so book early.

Ashrams and dharamshalas

For many families, staying in an ashram is part of the yatra. Rooms are simple, and there may be fixed meal and gate timings. In Haridwar, an ashram stay goes well with a yoga retreat of 5, 7 or 10 days. Ask about the rules before you book so nobody is surprised.

What to ask in each city

Winter Haridwar 2027. The mela runs from 14 January to 20 April 2027, and January and February mornings are near 5°C. Ask whether heaters and razai are provided, and whether there is hot water in the morning. Har Ki Pauri is the main ghat; Kankhal, Vishnu Ghat and Subhash Ghat are quieter. See our Haridwar Kumbh Mela 2027 guide for camps, hotels and yoga stays.

Monsoon Nashik 2027. The Amrit Snans fall in peak monsoon, with rain, slippery ghats and a rising river. For camps, ask about raised flooring and how the site drains. Decide first whether you will bathe at Ramkund in Nashik or Kushavarta in Trimbakeshwar, which are 28 to 30 km apart, and stay on that side. Nashik Road station is 8 to 10 km from Panchavati. See the Nashik Kumbh Mela 2027 guide.

Summer Ujjain 2028. The Simhastha is expected from 27 March to 27 May 2028, and it can touch 42°C by noon. Ask whether the room has AC or a cooler, and whether there is power backup. Stays near Ram Ghat or the Mahakaleshwar side save walking in the heat. See the Ujjain Kumbh Mela 2028 guide.

When to book

Book 3 to 4 months ahead, and earlier for the Amrit or Shahi Snan days. Plan to reach a day before any big snan. If you also want a puja with a local pandit, mention it when you book so it can be arranged around your dates.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between deluxe and luxury Swiss cottage tents?

Deluxe tents give you comfortable beds and the basics close to the mela. Luxury Swiss cottage tents are larger and come with attached bathrooms, which is a big help for elders at night.

Are camps a good idea for the Nashik Kumbh in monsoon?

They can be, if you check first. Ask about raised flooring and drainage, since it is peak monsoon with rain and a rising river.

What should we check for a stay in Ujjain in 2028?

Ask for AC or a cooler and power backup. It can touch 42°C by noon. A stay near Ram Ghat or the Mahakaleshwar side cuts down walking in the heat.

Will a Haridwar camp be warm enough in January?

Ask whether heaters and razai are provided and if there is hot water in the morning. January and February mornings in Haridwar are near 5°C.

Should we stay in Nashik or Trimbakeshwar?

Stay where you plan to bathe: Ramkund in Nashik or Kushavarta in Trimbakeshwar. The two are 28 to 30 km apart.

How early should we book a Kumbh stay?

Book 3 to 4 months ahead, earlier for Amrit or Shahi Snan days, and plan to reach a day before any big snan.
